In the world of RWBY, a Semblance is a power used by different characters. For the most part, each Semblance seems to be unique to different characters, although some exceptions appear, especially since it can even be hereditary in certain cases. However, not all Semblances appear to be balanced out, as some seem to come with drawbacks while others seem very powerful with almost no cost.

A character isn't always a reflection of their Semblance. Even if a person who was killed early on might have had an impressive Semblance, as this could be a reflection of the strongest character being taking out first rather than them being too weak to protect themselves. Likewise, even if a villain uses it, a Semblance in itself could still be impressive.

10 Worst: Misfortune Can Ruin A Person's Life

Qrow's Misfortune Semblance grants him the ability to give bad luck to his opponents. Unfortunately, it also practically curses everyone around him with bad luck. His Semblance is always active and cannot be turned off, also making it nearly impossible to control.

Because of his Semblance, Qrow has lived a life feeling cursed and unwanted. In fact, even his name is a reference to this. That said, Misfortune is powerful in battle and seems like it could be a lot more useful if it was just easier to control.

9 Best: Good Fortune Is Instant Good Luck

Clover, as his name suggests, has the Semblance of Good Fortune. It can bring good luck. What especially prevents this from becoming a burden like Misfortune is that Clover has greater control over his Semblance than Qrow does.

Added to this, Good Fortune just seems to keep Clover lucky, allowing him to survive ordeals that would normally be a death sentence to others. It even helps Clover in mundane activities, like playing cards. That said, it doesn't make him completely invulnerable, as Tyrian showcased during their final fight.

8 Worst: Via Sun Requires Standing Still On The Battlefield

Sun Wukong uses this Semblance to create tangible clones of himself. At first glance, it seems like a very beneficial ability, but it does have its drawbacks.

In order to use this, Sun is forced to stand still, although he's later able to overcome this. This Semblance also eats away at his Aura and he's been shown to exhaust himself by summoning too many clones at once. Added to that, the clones are not always useful and can be used against him: as an extension of his consciousness, he can be mentally attacked through his clones.

7 Best: Telekinesis Lets The User Command The Elements & Fix Property Damage

Telekinesis is a Semblance used by both Glynda Goodwitch and Carmine Esclados. While it seems simple enough, this might actually be in the user's favor as it can be used both defensively and offensively, stopping and creating attacks.

It has various capabilities, such as being able to repair broken objects and property, allowing the user to cover up a previous fight. Although Carmine is believed to have less mastery over Telekinesis than Goodwitch, she's still seen as a powerful force of nature; from commanding weather to creating tunnels underground.

6 Worst: Burn Is Very Powerful, But Even Yang Thought The Drawbacks Were Unfair

RWBY-Burn-Yang.jpg

At first glance, Burn is an extremely powerful Semblance, as it allows Yang to return any attack back to her opponent at twice the power. However, this means Yang needs to take hits in the first place, and the Semblance does not make her invulnerable. Using it can also deplete her Aura.

When Blake notes that Adam's Semblance is quite similar to Yang's, Yang herself noted that Adam has the advantage of absorbing damage into his sword and found this unfair.

5 Best: Moonslice Can Reflect Attacks & Store Energy For Later

RWBY-Adam-Moonslice.jpg

Adam's Semblance, Moonslice, is very similar in execution to Yang's Burn Semblance but with a main difference: he can absorb an attack with his weapon, the Wilt and Blush, and essentially reflect it back to a target when ready.

The obvious caveat is that he is highly vulnerable without his weapon. but as long as he has it on hand, he doesn't have to endure facing a direct attack. Added to this, he can use it to store energy and is even capable of making physical afterimages.

4 Worst: Lie Detection Keeps People From Trusting You

Robyn actually seems to try to comfort Qrow about the problems her Semblance, Lie Detection, seems to cause her. Because she has the power to tell what's the truth and what's a lie, people are distant towards her out of fear that she'll learn their secrets.

It seems she's spent her whole life unable to make connections with other people because of her ability. This revelation even surprises Qrow.

3 Best: Scorching Caress Is Basically The Power Of Transformation

Raven-VS-Cinder-In-RWBY.jpg

Cinder's Semblance, Scorching Caress, gives her the power to superheat objects and change their shape. Notably, she can transform sand or dust into glass and use it to attack. Essentially, she has the power of transformation in her hands, being able to change her clothing or even weapons with the power of glass.

She can also use this power to create explosions as well as control fire and heat. This Semblance is seen as extremely deadly, as seen against Cinder's abusive foster family and Pyrrha Nikos.

2 Worst: Photographic Memory Might End Up Holding The User Back

Velvet's Photographic Memory Semblance allows her to mimic other people's moves and fighting styles. She's even capable of creating hard-light copies of weapons. She can even use multiple fighting styles at once.

However, there are a few caveats. She cannot mimic another person's Semblance or attacks directly connected to it. The weapons she creates only seem to survive a few hits. Finally, because her Semblance relies on other people's fighting styles, it's been suspected by fans that she won't be able to hone and improve on her own fighting style like other characters, eventually putting her at a disadvantage.

1 Best: Overactive Imagination Just Seems To Have Unlimited Potential

Neopolitan-Disguise-Shattered-In-RWBY.jpg

Neopolitan has the Semblance over Overactive Imagination and it seems to have limitless capabilities. She can create physical illusions that seem to trick everyone, can increase or decrease mass, and create camouflage for all sorts of items, even a ship. In fact, the ability was created for a scene where she and Roman needed a quick exit.

It's possible that Neopolitan's other abilities, such as seemingly being able to teleport, are faked using her power of illusion. She's also been shown using her illusions in order to communicate.
