WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the first fifteen minutes of Army of the Dead, which begins streaming on Netflix May 21.

Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead centers on a daring heist in the middle of zombie-infested Las Vegas. But had it not been for a horrible accident, the zombie outbreak might not have happened at all. Here are all the details about how the zombie invasion begins and why Vegas becomes ground zero.

When the movie starts, zombies are fictional beings -- at least to most people. A military convoy that's been given the ominous name the Four Horsemen and includes four imposing armored vehicles transports a mysterious payload off a military base as the sun is setting. The men have no idea what they're transporting, although they speculate it could be an alien, given they're coming from Area 51 in southern Nevada.

At the same time, on a highway leading out of Las Vegas, a couple poses for a photo by a sign indicating the city's limit. They just got married at one of Vegas' chapels and are ecstatic about their newlywed status. After the camera snaps the picture, the pair hop in their car. As the man drives, the woman informs him she has a present for him. At first, he's confused because she didn't have time to get him something, but when she starts doing a sexy shimmy and undoing his belt buckle, he begins to understand.

The man has a hard time enjoying himself and driving at the same time, but luckily, the road is clear of cars -- with the exception of the military convoy. But, as the convoy approaches Vegas, it also approaches the couple's car, which veers into the convoy's lane. The first truck in the convoy swerves to avoid the newlyweds, and their car hits the front of the second truck in a head-on collision. There's a fiery explosion and the newlyweds' car goes up in flames, killing them, and the vault the convoy was transporting is thrown off the second truck into the road.

One of the men radios the base to report the accident and request medical assistance, and the woman on the other end of the line calmly tells him help is on the way. Then she asks about the state of the payload, whose damaged door has just fallen open as another man approaches it with his gun drawn. When the woman on the other end of the radio hears the vault is open, she's no longer calm. She orders the men not to approach the payload and to get as far away from it as possible.

Her instructions come too late, however. Something emerges from the damaged vault and immediately attacks the men in front of it, biting their necks and tearing them to shreds. Even though they shoot at it, the bullets don't seem to slow it down. Yes, it appears the military has either acquired or created a zombie, and this beast is neither slow nor stupid.

Only two men from the convoy are able to escape. They run into the desert after they see the zombie attack their colleagues, but they're far too slow to make a clean getaway. The zombie soon catches up with them, ripping out the jaw of one while biting deep into the throat of the other. They both then quickly reanimate as intelligent zombies, and as the three zombies gather together, they're attracted to the bright lights of Vegas, making it clear their next stop is going somewhere where they can indulge in an all-you-can-eat buffet of tourists, showgirls and Elvis impersonators.

Directed and co-written by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead stars Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell, Omari Hardwick, Raul Castillo, Tig Notaro, Theo Rossi and Ana de la Reguera. The film is currently in theaters and arrives on Netflix on Friday, May 21.
